What is Unit Cooler?

Unit cooler is also called evaporator unit, cold room indoor unit, is an essential refrigeration equipment for Cold Room.

It included 6 important components: Evaporator coil & fin, cooling and heating exchange pipeline, axial flow fan, liquid separator, defroster, and water tray.

It relies on the axial flow fan forcing the air (in the cold room) to flow through the cooling exhaust pipe of heat exchange aiming to cool the air, finally reduce the cold room temperature and keep it stable.

Unit Cooler Fin

Fin color is optional: Bule, golden, and natural.

Depending on the ambient temperature, unit cooler will use different fin spacings.

Commonly used fin spacings for unit coolers are 4mm, 4.5mm, 6~9mm, 10mm, 12mm, and 16mm.

The lower the cold room temperature, the larger the fin spacing. Incorrect fin spacing means the fin frosting speed will be fast, which will quickly block the air passage, and  making it difficult to cool the cold room. Meanwhile , result in the compressor inefficiently and  increasing the power consumption of the whole refrigeration system.

Unit cooler fins 01

Fin Spacing

#1. Medium / High temp cold room (-15℃~+15℃)

Such as workshop, shady storage,  fresh storage, air conditioning storage, ripening storage, etc., the fin spacing should be 4mm or 4.5mm.

Fin spacing

#2. Low temp cold room (-18°C~-25°C)

Such as low-temperature freezer, low-temperature logistics warehouse, the fin spacing should be 6mm~9mm.

#3.Blast freezr cold room (-25℃~-45℃)

Fin spacing is generally 10mm~12mm. If the humidity of the quick-frozen goods is high, had better select the unit cooler with variable fin spacing, and the fin spacing on the air inlet side can be 16mm.

Note: In some occasions, Can’t select the fin spacing simply by temperature, such as the frequency in/out of stored items (such as meat, fish, seafood and vegetables, etc), so please Contact Our Salesman for unique solution.

Unit Cooler Coil

# Array ways of unit cooler coil

There are 2 array ways of unit cooler : cross and positive.

In same cooling area and wind speed, the heat transfer efficiency of cross array is better than positive array; However, the cross array produces more resistance when the air flows than the positive array. When use the same fan, the heat exchanger air volume of cross array is smaller than positive array.

At same heat exchange area, if the coil arrangement is different, the products’ heat exchange volume is different.

Unit Cooler Defrost

Causes of frost

#1. Incorrect installation Position

If unit cooler installed above the Cold Room Door. Once you open the door, the hot air outside the cold room is directly sucked into the inside of the unit cooler, and the water vapor is also condensed on the cooler housing and the fan grille.

Unit cooler frost-with arrow

#2. Higher relative humidity (RH)

The cold room door will frequently open and close when discharge the goods. Because the door is long time opened resulting in the continuous intrusion of huge external hot air into the cold room.

#3. Incomplete defrosting

Due to the insufficient defrosting time and the unreasonable position of the defrosting reset probe, the evaporator will be turned on when the defrosting is incomplete, and the partial frost layer of the evaporator will become icing after several cycles finally become larger and larger.

Stainless Steel Evaporator

Defrost Ways

#1. Manual defrositing

Pay attention to safety first during the manual defrosting process, do not damage the refrigeration equipment (coil, fin).

#2. Water defrosting

Pouring water on the evaporator surface, then the temperature of the evaporator rises, forcing the frost attached to the evaporator surface to melt. This way is carried outside the evaporator, so must treat well the waterflow in the process to avoid affecting the normal use of the refrigeration equipment.

Unit cooler - side cooling

#3. Electric heating defrosting
Install electric heating tubes or heating wires inside the unit cooler fins to defrost by the current thermal effect. This way can intelligently control the defrosting through a micro-computer controller, which can greatly reduce labor time and cost.

Evaporator electric heat defrost

Electric Heat Defrost Wire (Red Arrow)

#4. Thermal fluid defrosting
Use refrigerant vapor (with higher temperature) discharged from the compressor to enter the evaporator after passing through the oil separator, meanwhile use the released heat  when the thermal fluid is condensed to melt the frost on the evaporator.

Unit Cooler Cooling Capacity Calculation

Do you know how to select the correct unit cooler cooling capacity for your cold room?

Chiller Cold Room

The load per cubic meter (m³) is calculated as 75W

#1. If cold room Volume < 30m³, multiply by factor A=1.2

For example: Cold room volume is 20m³, so you need to choose unit cooler cooling capacity: 20 x 75 x 1.2=1,800W

#2.If 30m³≤Volume<100m³, multiply by factor A=1.1

#3. If Volume≥100m³, multiply the factor A=1.0

Freezer Cold Room

The load per cubic meter (m³) is calculated as 70W

#1. If cold room Volume < 30m³, multiply by factor A=1.2

For example: Cold room volume is 20m³, so you need to choose unit cooler cooling capacity: 20 x 70 x 1.2=1,680W

#2.If 30m³≤Volume<100m³, multiply by factor A=1.1

#3. If Volume≥100m³, multiply the factor A=1.0
